The Yellow Umbrella

Ms. Gashi always carried a yellow umbrella on school trips.

“Follow the umbrella and you won't get lost,” she said.

“Ndiqni çadrën dhe nuk do të humbisni,” tha ajo.

In May, they went to Berat, the city of a thousand windows.

Agon loved taking photos.

Agonit i pëlqente shumë të bënte fotografi.

He took photos of old doors and a sleeping cat.

When he looked up, the class wasn't there.

All the streets looked the same.

Të gjitha rrugicat dukeshin njësoj.

He wanted to call Ms. Gashi, but his phone was dead.

Donte ta merrte në telefon mësuesen Gashi, por telefoni i kishte mbetur pa bateri.

Agon was scared, but then he had an idea.

He climbed up the hill to the castle.

U ngjit në kodër deri te kalaja.

From the top, he could see the whole city.

Nga lart mund ta shihte gjithë qytetin.

Far below, near the river, there was a tiny yellow dot.

Atje poshtë, pranë lumit, dukej një pikë e vogël e verdhë.

Agon took one more photo and ran down as fast as he could.

Ms. Gashi counted the students again and again.

Mësuesja Gashi i numëronte nxënësit sërish e sërish.

“Twenty-four!” she shouted when she saw him.

“Njëzet e katër!” bërtiti ajo kur e pa.

“Agon, where were you?”

“Agon, ku ishe?”

He showed her his last photo: the whole city and one tiny yellow umbrella.

Ms. Gashi looked at it and laughed.

Mësuesja Gashi e shikoi dhe qeshi.

“Next time, you are going to carry the umbrella,” she said.

“Herën tjetër, çadrën do ta mbash ti,” tha ajo.
